Basil on a countertop — first harvest guide
How to get usable basil from a pod garden or sill pot without leggy disappointment.
Basil is the reason most people buy a countertop garden. It’s also the plant that shows light problems first.
Light
- Kit LED on for ~15–16 hours is fine for basil.
- Keep the light close (follow the brand’s height guidance) so plants don’t stretch.
- On a sill without a kit, basil wants the brightest window you have — or a clip lamp.
Pinching
When you have 2–3 sets of true leaves, pinch the tip above a leaf pair. Side shoots fill out a bushier plant. Skipping this is how you get one tall stalk.
Harvest
Take leaves from the top down. Never strip a plant bare. Frequent small harvests beat one giant cut.
